Cholangiocyte

Make it clearer

A cholangiocyte is a cell that lines the inside of the liver's bile ducts. Picture a network of connected tubes: cholangiocytes form their inner walls, and bile flows through the middle.

Bile is first produced by hepatocytes, the liver's main cells. As bile moves through the ducts, cholangiocytes modify it through absorption and secretion before it reaches the duodenum.

In brief

A cholangiocyte is an epithelial cell that lines the network of bile ducts within the liver.

Before bile reaches the duodenum, cholangiocytes modify the bile produced by hepatocytes through hormone-regulated absorption and secretion. These cells form the lining through which bile travels. Their absorption and secretion change its composition during passage through the ducts, before it enters the small intestine.
