Dermal fibroblast

Make it clearer

The dermis is the layer of skin that sits below the epidermis, the surface layer, and above the subcutaneous tissue, the fatty one. It is connective tissue, that is, supporting tissue. And the main cell that lives in it is the fibroblast.

What the fibroblast does is build. It synthesizes collagen, elastic fibers and reticular fibers, and also the material of the extracellular matrix, which is everything that fills the space between cells. It is the cell that weaves the fabric the skin rests on.

Those fibers do not all do the same job. Collagen is the main component of the dermis. Elastin, by contrast, has a configuration that lets the fibers slide, stretch and spring back.

In brief

The fibroblast is the main cell of the dermis, the layer of connective tissue between the epidermis and the subcutaneous tissue.

It synthesizes collagen, elastic and reticular fibers, and the material of the extracellular matrix.

It is the cell that weaves the fabric the skin rests on.

Those fibers divide the labor: collagen is the main component of the dermis, and elastin lets the fibers slide, stretch and recoil.
