Function of the testis

Make it clearer

The testis produces sperm cells and secretes androgens. These two functions occur in neighboring regions of the same organ.

Leydig cells lie in the interstitium next to the seminiferous tubules. Inside those tubules, Sertoli cells support germ cells at different stages of maturation.

In brief

The testis produces sperm cells and secretes androgens.

Leydig cells lie in the interstitium next to the seminiferous tubules, while Sertoli cells support germ cells at different stages of maturation.

Picture tubules surrounded by interstitial tissue: Sertoli cells inside, Leydig cells beside them.
