Hair matrix cell
Make it clearer
A hair matrix cell is found deep in the follicle, inside the bulb and around the dermal papilla. Think of this area as the hair's assembly zone.
Here, matrix keratinocytes multiply and form the shaft that grows upward. Among these cells are melanocytes, the cells that give the hair shaft its color as it forms.
In brief
A hair matrix cell is found in the deepest part of the follicle, in the bulb that surrounds the dermal papilla, at the base where hair forms.
The keratinocytes in this matrix multiply there and form the hair shaft, which grows upward from the base.
Among these keratinocytes are melanocytes, the cells that give the hair shaft its color as it forms.
