Neuron

Make it clearer

A neuron is a cell in nervous tissue that specializes in communication. It shares this tissue with glial cells, but neurons perform the central job of sending and receiving signals.

Picture a cell with input branches and an output cable. The dendrites are the branches that receive much of the information from other neurons. The axon is the extension that connects the neuron to its target cell.

In brief

A neuron is one of the two basic cell classes in nervous tissue and carries out the nervous system's communication function.

Its dendrites receive much of the signaling from other neurons, while its axon carries signals from the neuron to a target cell.

Picture a cell with receiving branches and an output cable: the branches are dendrites, and the cable is the axon.
