Serum creatinine test

Make it clearer

Serum creatinine is the amount of creatinine measured in a blood sample. Creatinine is a waste product formed during normal muscle activity that then enters the circulation.

The kidneys work like a filter that removes creatinine from the blood and sends it into the urine. That is why the measurement can provide information related to kidney function. But one creatinine value does not tell the whole story. The test measures a specific substance; on its own, that number is not a complete explanation of how the kidneys are working.

In brief

A serum creatinine test measures the blood level of creatinine, a waste product generated by normal muscle activity.

The kidneys normally filter creatinine from the blood and excrete it in the urine, but creatinine by itself is not the best measure of kidney function.

Creatinine circulates in the blood until the kidneys filter it out.
