Thyroid ultrasound
Make it clearer
A thyroid ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the gland and evaluate the appearance of its nodules.
These images show structure, but on their own they do not determine thyroid function. They show what the gland looks like, not whether it is working within the expected range.
In brief
A thyroid ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the thyroid gland and evaluate the appearance of its nodules.
Ultrasound shows structure, but it cannot by itself determine whether thyroid function is normal, underactive, or overactive.
The image shows structure; it does not measure gland function on its own.
