Ulcerative colitis
Make it clearer
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. An abnormal immune response keeps the innermost lining of the large intestine inflamed and can produce ulcers, which are areas where that lining has been injured.
The disease does not necessarily behave the same way every day. It can alternate between flares, when inflammation is accompanied by symptoms, and remissions, when those symptoms disappear. Think of the lining as an injured surface that can flare up or quiet down again while remaining part of the same disease.
In brief
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease in which an abnormal immune response inflames and ulcerates the inner lining of the large intestine.
Its activity can alternate between flares, when symptoms are present, and periods of remission, when symptoms disappear.
