Venous function
Make it clearer
Veins return blood from the tissues to the heart. In the limbs, muscles help with that return: when they contract, they squeeze nearby veins and push blood toward the heart.
Valves in many large veins act like one-way gates. They open as blood moves forward and close when the muscle relaxes, limiting backward flow. Muscles and valves work together to move blood back to the heart.
In brief
Veins return blood from the tissues to the heart.
In the limbs, muscle contraction compresses the veins and pushes blood forward; one-way valves help prevent blood from flowing backward when the muscle relaxes.
