Cervix

Make it clearer

The cervix is the fibromuscular part that joins the uterus to the vagina. Picture a short neck with a channel through its center: one half remains within the pelvis, while the other projects into the upper part of the vagina.

The cervix is therefore more than an opening. It is a complete structure that forms a continuous passage between the uterine cavity and the vagina, with an internal portion and an intravaginal portion.

In brief

The cervix is a fibromuscular organ that connects the uterine cavity with the vagina. It is built around a canal: it is not merely the opening that can be seen, but a structure with an internal portion and a second portion that projects into the vagina.

A neck joins uterus and vagina.

Its lower half, called the intravaginal portion, lies at the upper end of the vagina. The upper half sits above it within the pelvis. This position makes the cervix the anatomical connection between the two spaces.
