HPV test
Make it clearer
An HPV test looks for DNA or RNA from high-risk types of human papillomavirus in cells, usually from the cervix. Picture two different searches within a sample: this one asks whether genetic traces of the virus are present.
A Pap test asks a different question by examining the cells for changes. An HPV result therefore describes viral detection, not a cancer diagnosis. The virus and cellular changes are related, but they are not the same finding.
In brief
An HPV test is a laboratory analysis that looks for DNA or RNA from high-risk types of human papillomavirus in a sample of cells, usually collected from the cervix.
It is not the same as cervical cytology, also called a Pap test. An HPV test looks for viral genetic material, while cytology examines cellular changes. Detecting the virus alone does not diagnose cancer.
