Pancreatic histology
Make it clearer
Pancreatic histology shows two components mixed within the same tissue. The exocrine portion forms acini, small groups of cells located at the ends of ducts. Their cells secrete enzyme-rich pancreatic fluid into those ducts.
Pancreatic islets, also called islets of Langerhans, appear among the acini and make up the endocrine portion. Picture a map filled with exocrine units and small endocrine islets scattered among them.
In brief
The exocrine portion of the pancreas forms acini, small groups of cells located at the ends of ducts. Acinar cells secrete enzyme-rich pancreatic fluid into these ducts.
The endocrine portion forms pancreatic islets, also called islets of Langerhans, scattered among the acini of the exocrine portion.
