Make it clearer
The skin is the body's covering. In a three-layer description, picture a cross section made of stacked sheets: the epidermis is on the outside, the connective-tissue dermis is in the middle, and the subcutaneous layer lies innermost.
Together, these layers form a barrier for deeper tissues. That barrier protects them from abrasion, helps keep microbes out, limits unwanted water loss, and helps block damage from ultraviolet light.
In brief
In a three-layer anatomical description, the skin consists of an outer epidermis, a middle dermis made of connective tissue, and an inner subcutaneous layer.
This covering protects deeper tissues from abrasion, the entry of microbes, unwanted water loss, and damage from ultraviolet light.
